National Kidney Registry Facilitates 10,000th Living Donor Kidney Transplant

The National Kidney Registry (NKR) announced its 10,000th transplant, with 1,744 transplants facilitated in 2024 alone. The NKR facilitated its first transplant in 2008 and reached the 5,000-transplant milestone in June 2021. The NKR is expected to facilitate approximately 30% of all U.S. living donor kidney transplants in 2025.

“This is a remarkable milestone and a testament to the many amazing living donors who make these transplant miracles possible,” said Garet Hil, living kidney donor and the Founder of the NKR.

“The success of kidney paired donation (KPD) is unparalleled in organ transplantation and the pioneering and innovative work of the National Kidney Registry in reaching this incredible milestone is remarkable,” said Dr. Matt Cooper, NKR Surgical Director and Chief of Transplantation, Medical College of Wisconsin. “Consistently removing barriers to living donation and increasing access for individuals to donate the gift of life has been the hallmark of the organization. As we celebrate 10,000 lives saved by KPD, let’s imagine what the future will bring and embrace the opportunities.”
